According to a Jewish World Review analysis by Dick Morris & Eileen Mc Gann, James Baker is plotting to strike a deal with Iran that would call for the Islamic Republic to flex its Shiite muscle to help quell turmoil in neighboring Iraq in exchange for implicit US permission for an Iranian nuclear bomb.
The analysis states that Baker will use his influence as the newly appointed co-chair of the Iraq Study Group to strike a deal with the Iranians which would leave Israel to fend for itself-- and possibly for the rest of the Free World too-- so that the US might put a political bandaid on bloody sectarian violence in Iraq.
Baker's position is no surprise to observers of his career and political attitudes. However, many are wondering why President Bush-- a (Teddy) Roosevelt-styled foreign policy activist-- is returning to the policy styles of his father, who appointed Baker Secretary of State
Others are speculating that the Bush team, in a classic Karl Rove maneuver, is attempting to refill the administration's stores with political currency in the wake of the Democratic sweep of Congress and, more importantly, in the face of the remaining two years of the Bush presidency and the upcoming presidential election.
If this were the case, Baker might simply be a pawn in one of Rove's favorite Napoleonic philosophies of war: "A circumspect defensive followed by a rapid and audacious attack."
However, if this is not the case, Israel-- the US, Europe, and the rest of the Free World-- might be in seriously hot (heavy) water. |
