President Bush accepted the resignation of John Bolton today when the latter's term as US Ambassador to the UN expires at the end of the year.
Bolton is considered a strongly pro-democratic voice within an international body that has no lack of dictatorial and tyrannical voting members.
Bolton has also been praised for standing up against blatantly anti-Israel sentiment within the UN-- a world body that has grown statistically anti-Israel in its casting of resolutions and condemnations against the only country in the UN that is not a permanent member of a voting group or bloc. (According to UN convention and geography, Israel should be a member of the Asia group but its entrance was barred by Arab and Muslim countries.)
Bush's acceptance of the resignation is an indicator of the unlikelihood that Bolton will receive Senate confirmation of his appointment. Bush appointed Bolton to the position in 2005 while Congress was in recess and his nomination has remained deadlocked by lawmakers since then. |
