The Sea-Tac Christmas tree episode is far from over. The latest installment is the virulent outpouring of anti-Semitism in the form of hate-mail and threats directed at Jews in the Seattle area, says an editorial in the Seattle Times.
The editorial notes the especially vicious nature of the outlash given that the Jewish community never asked for the Christmas trees to be removed; the request was only for a Hannukah menorah to be placed alongside them.
The overt hatred comes at a time when world anti-Semitism rates are on the rise, fueled by conspiracy theory against Jews and prodded along by hatemongers such as the President of Iran who staged a Holocaust denial conference this week.
Many assume that Americans are above this kind of unabashed hatred and ignorance, but displays of the kind in Seattle are leading some to raise questions about new anti-Semitic trends in the States. |
