An Israeli-Palestinian poll conducted this month by the Harry S. Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) in Ramallah reveals that 58 percent of Israelis and 81 percent of Palestinians prefer a comprehensive peace agreement to the conflict, as opposed to an interim agreement.
The polls did not define what a "comprehensive peace" would comprise.
The poll found that 66 percent of Israelis support negotiations with a Palestinian unity government including Hamas, if necessary to reach a compromise. 54 percent of Israelis support a compromise with Hamas itself in order to reach a comprehensive peace.
36 percent of Palestinians polled believe that the peace process should be continued, since it might be successful, but that military means (e.g. terrorism including suicide bombings) should be used in conjunction to the peace process. However, 21 percent of Palestinians believe that the "peace process" will fail and that militant means should be used.
48 percent of Palestinians believe that Qassam rocket attacks are in line with Palestinian interests while an equal percentage believes the attacks are contrary to Palestinian interests.
With regard to whether the intifada achieved Palestinian national and political objectives that would not have been achieved via negotiation, 49 percent of Palestinians polled agreed with the statement and another 49 percent disagreed.
36 percent of Palestinians said they would vote for Hamas if elections were held today, and 42 percent said they would vote for Fatah. As for the question of whom Palestinians would elect president, 46 percent of those polled said they would vote for Abbas, while 45 percent said they would vote for Haniyeh. |
