Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi called for Jews to be allowed in Mecca in order to join Muslims in prayer, a report by Ynet says.
Mecca, Islam's holiest city where the religion's most holy site, the Kaaba, is located, strictly forbids entrance to non-Muslims.
The Libyan leader of the 1969 revolution made the call as Muslims ushered in Id al-Adha, the Islamic holiday that commemorates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his only son.
Despite the seemingly egalitarian tone of Gaddafi's comment, his statement that, "We are the followers of Prophet Mohammad but our position today is wrong because we are preventing [Jews and Christians] from worshiping God and encircling the Kaaba," reveals a more fundamentalist motive to the comment. |
