DM Peretz will resign -- if he's found 'responsible' for war failures

Defense Minister Peretz told families of slain IDF soldiers that he would resign his post if he is found responsible for failures and unnecessary deaths in the Lebanon war.

Peretz's comments come as the government's investigatory probe into the war, the Winograd Committee, is set to release its final assessment of the government's handling of the war.

Peretz was confronted by families of the dead soldiers who pressed him with questions as to why he has not yet taken responsibility for failures and mismanagement of the military.

Many Israelis see the Lebanon war as a gross failure in which the small and mostly irregular Hezbollah army was able to withstand attack from the IDF. There is also much criticism within Israel concerning the lack or delay of emergency services in the north of Israel.

The Winograd Committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Eliyahu Winograd, has itself come under fire from critics as being more of a nominal gesture than an authoritative and empowered committee. Prime Minister Olmert blocked the formation of a state commission, whose members must be appointed by the Supreme Court, and instead opted to assemble the Winograd Committee, whose members he appointed.
