The Defense Ministry is rethinking its recent approval of a Jordan Valley community located over the Green Line due to US and EU disapproval.

The Israeli government and the Defense Ministry downplayed the decision to allow the construction of 30 homes for Gaza evacuees in Maskiot and referred to it as simply an adjustment of the status of land authorized for settlement, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Defense Ministy sources said that Defense Minister Amir Peretz decided to rethink the decision after the EU and the US expressed their disapproval. The US and EU claimed that approval of the community violates Israel's international commitments with respect to settlements in the West Bank.

The community currently has only a few permanent residents and a pre-army academy.
