Israel's defense industry made $4.4 billion worth of sales in 2006, an all-time record for Israel. The 2006 sales represent both Israel's high-quality defense systems and a marketing push by the major defense industry corporations.
The top buyer of Israeli defense systems was India, with $1.5 billion in sales, says the Jerusalem Post. Another $1 billion worth of defense goods was sold to the US.
The rapidly growing defense industry in Israel represents not only a major revenue source for the country but also a means of solidifying strategic alliances with strong democratic countries like India.
Instead of competing with defense industry giants like the US, Israel has carved out a niche for itself in the industry by selling 'accessory' systems to enhance or upgrade larger defense platforms. Israel does not, for example, manufacture its own fighter jets but it does build systems to make US fighters, like the F-16, more effective. |
