The rocket-riddled Israeli town of Sderot is suing the government of Israel, saying that it should not have to pay taxes while the government is not protecting its citizens, a report by Israel National News says.
The Israeli border town has been hit by countless Qassam rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. So far the government and military have taken only limited action -- and in recent months no action -- to stop the weekly barrage of rockets.
Residents of the city filed a District Court petition arguing that the government has no right to tax the residents while it is not providing the basic service of protecting their lives.
The residents, who have also complained that their houses and schools have not been properly fortified by the government, are requesting a retroactive return on taxes paid since the Qassam attacks began on the town in the summer of 2004.
Referring to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's policy of 'restraint', the residents' attorney remarked that, "If the IDF won't fight, Sderot residents aren't going to pay." |
