The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is at the center of all the problems in the Middle East, the new UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon, said. He added that other issues in the Middle East are likely to be solved if progress is made on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, The Jerusalem Post says.
Israel's official position on this issue -- that the cause of the region's conflict is terrorism, Islamism, and a deep-seated hatred of the West -- is at odds with the secretary-general's position, but Israel welcomed Ban to office warmly, nonetheless.
Ban was the first South Korean foreign minister to visit Israel in the nation's history. According to one Israeli envoy to the UN, Roni Leshno Ya'ar, Ban shows readiness and fairness to study the issues surrounding the conflict. |
