Students at 10 colleges and universities went on strike Wednesday, protesting the Shochat Committee on higher education, Haaretz reports.
The approximately 125,000 students participating in the strikes threatened that if tuitions were not cut in half, as the government guaranteed in 2001, and the Shochat Committee were not dismantled, the strike would continue indefinitely.
The Shochat Committee was appointed by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Finance Minister Abraham Hirchson, and Education Minister Yuli Tamir, and is discussing issues such as tuition, wages for lecturers, and the advancement of academic research. The Committee will present its proposals by June. |
