A man was seriously injured Wednesday morning following an explosion in a car near the railway station in Netanya, a city north of Tel Aviv. Police estimated that the explosion was criminally motivated, as the injured man, Shuli Rokah, was a senior crime figure.
A Magen David Adom crew evacuated the man, who suffered from burns, to the Laniado Hospital in the city. He was later taken to the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer for further treatment. A man working in the area told Ynet, "It was apparently an assassination attempt. We heard a loud explosion and thought it was a terror attack. It was very stressful; everyone in the area panicked."
According to sources in Netanya, the man injured in the explosion had been protecting business owners in the city from criminals trying to collect "protection money." The sources said that the man had not been involved in crime for the past few years. The police, however, said that Rokah was still involved in criminal acts. The investigation revealed that there were no early warnings of plans to assassinate him. |
