"I believe I will rise to the challenge and rehabilitate the presidency," former Knesset Speaker and longtime MK Reuven Rivlin (Likud) said as he officially launched his anticipated presidential campaign on Monday afternoon.
Rivlin, who enjoys the support of the majority of the opposition as well as parts of the coalition, is set to take on Vice Premier Shimon Peres -- the frontrunner as far as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is concerned.
Last Sunday the cabinet legislative committee passed the 'Peres Bill,' which changed the Knesset's presidential voting to an open ballot method. The bill was passed by a two-vote majority, with seven ministers voting in favor and five opposing.
