Israeli MK Jamal Zahalka, who was quoted likening Israel to South Africa under apartheid, is currently en route to Montreal for the third annual "Israeli Apartheid Week," Army Radio reported Tuesday.
Israeli Apartheid Week, February 12-17 2007, is a weeklong event being held on college campuses throughout North America and Europe.
It is expected that Jewish students in Montreal will protest both Zahalka and the events, and rally in support of Israel.
The organizers of the event have compared Israel to South Africa, saying "that Israel is in fact an apartheid state, not just a belligerent occupying power."
According to the organization's official website, "The aim of Israeli Apartheid Week is to push forward the analysis of Israel as an apartheid state and to bolster support for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign in accordance with [...]: full equality for Arab citizens of Israel, an end to the occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza, and the implementation of the right of return and compensation for Palestinian refugees."
Meanwhile, the former Canadian justice minister Irwin Cotler, who is currently visiting Israel for a two-day Global Forum Against Anti-Semitism, says that this time MK Zahalka went too far in his actions against Israel, the country he is employed to represent.
During his passionate speech concluding the event, the former justice minister gave his opinions on "Israeli Apartheid."
"When a Middle East has no room for Israel, no matter what its borders are, that is a true apartheid." |
