A special committee for economic cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority to improve the Palestinian economy is scheduled to start operating, following a seminar on Tuesday at the official residence of the US Ambassador to Israel, Richard Jones.

The seminar was initiated by Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh with the aim of bringing Israeli and Palestinian officials to discuss ways of strengthening Mahmoud Abbas' administration by improving the economy. This is the first time in recent months that Israeli and Palestinian officials, including ministers, have met with such an agenda.

Deputy Minister Sneh said that "economic development is one of the many aspects of the fight against terrorism; economic growth will boost restraint and will replace despair with hope." According to Sneh, the issue of improving the transport of goods to and from Gaza will be the next item on the committee's agenda.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz said at the opening of the seminar: "I am a partner for unconditional peace. I am leading the establishment of a Palestinian state, for the interest of Israel. It is in our interest that the Palestinian economy be rehabilitated and our policy is to open the crossings. Those who threaten the Palestinian economy are the terrorist organizations who tried to blow up Karni Crossing," he said.
