The United Torah Judaism faction turned down an offer by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for the Social Welfare portfolio in return for joining his coalition, according to a statement issued by the religious party on Wednesday night. The party rejected Olmert's offer after he refused their demands to roll back cuts to child allowances.
In addition to restoring child allowances, UTJ demanded granting ultra-Orthodox educational institutions government support that is equal to that enjoyed by public schools as conditions to join the government.
The collapse of the negotiations means that UTJ chairman MK Yakov Litzman will end his tenure as the Chairman of the Finance Committee next week.
The Israel Our Home faction has been tipped to take over the post, after party leader Avigdor Lieberman issued Olmert an ultimatum to allot the post to his hawkish party.
