IDF investigating shooting of Negev girl

A 12-year-old Bedouin girl was found critically wounded in the Negev, Wednesday afternoon. After being discovered by another Bedouin child, she was transferred to hospital, where it was determined she had been wounded in the head by gunfire.

The girl was originally picked up by family members near the Urim junction and transferred to paramedics near Kibbutz Urim. Paramedic Yigal Avin, who treated her there, told Ynet: "We identified a head wound and tried to resuscitate her."

The Israel Defense Forces are checking whether the girl, who appears to have been tending sheep, sustained her injury near one of the military's firing ranges in the south.

Dr. Tsachi Ben-Zion, the Deputy Director of Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, where the girl is being treated, said that she was critically injured after sustaining a gunshot wound to the skull, and is currently unconscious.

"This is a very sad incident and we're doing all we can," the doctor added.

The girl's father and several male relatives are waiting at the hospital, but refused to speak to reporters too explain what happened. The police are investigating the issue, in addition to the IDF.

Bedouins in the Negev have been wounded by IDF equipment in the past. In May 2006, a 12-year-old boy was killed in an explosion, after wandering into a firing range on his donkey. It is believed that the donkey stepped on a munitions shell, triggering the explosion.

Two months earlier, four people were killed in two separate incidents, following detonations of previously unexploded mortar shells in firing ranges.

Hanan Greenberg contributed to the report.
