An IDF soldier was seriously injured in the neck by a bullet shot by a fellow soldier during a tank training exercise in northern Israel on Tuesday.
The soldier was taken to Poria Hospital in Tiberias and arrived in a moderate condition, according to doctors, but his condition became more serious soon after.
Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi ordered that all training maneuvers scheduled for the ground forces be stopped until an investigation into the incident was completed.
The IDF said soldiers were using dummy cartridges during the exercise, but one of the soldiers had at least one real cartridge in his magazine and, as a result, he shot and injured the soldier.
An IDF officer described the incident as an accident that should have been prevented. The officer said, "There are clear rules that are meant to ensure that dummy cartridges are dummy cartridges and not real bullets that can cause disasters."
