BBC journalist kidnapped in Gaza

Masked Palestinian gunmen abducted a BBC correspondent outside his Gaza City apartment on Monday.

Palestinian Authority security officials were able to quickly identify the victim as Alan Johnston because the latter had thrown a business card on the ground during his kidnapping.

The BBC bureau chief in Jerusalem, Simon Wilson, could not confirm the kidnapping, though said the agency had lost contact with Johnston.

Gaza-based Palestinian terrorists have abducted more than a dozen foreign journalists and aid workers over the past 18 months. The gunmen usually seek government favors or aim to exact revenge on the opposing Palestinian faction.

Most are released unharmed after a short period of time though some are held for longer, an example being two Fox journalists who were captured this past summer and held for two weeks before being released.

A Gaza City Hamas representative stated, "We call on these criminal groups to stop this destruction of our reputation and to let this journalist free."
