About 75 years after the city Braunschweig (Brunswick) allowed Hitler to obtain German citizenship, Social Democrats (SPD) want to strip him of his nationality posthumously, as reported by Reuters on Ynetnews.
A parliamentary spokesman for the party said the move is "meant as a symbolic gesture," and added that it's what the city wants.
Braunschweig has had to live with the stigma of being the city responsible for giving Hitler German citizenship, and thereby providing him with the ability to seize power.
Hitler was born in Austria, but gave up his citizenship in 1925, and only obtained German citizenship when Nazi officials in Braunschweig provided him with a local civil servant post in February 1932.
As a civil servant, Hitler was automatically granted German citizenship, which he then used to run for president of the German Reich in March of 1932. |
