BERLIN -- Legal authorities in Germany have revealed that a number of the bodyguards who were assigned to protect officials in the Jewish community are neo-Nazi sympathizers, Ynetnews reported. The bodyguards' anti-Semitic sentiments have been known for a year but were kept quiet until now.
These bodyguards were responsible for ensuring the safety of Michel Friedman, one of the most threatened personalities in Germany. Friedman no longer holds official positions in the Jewish community, since he resigned following a drug scandal in 2003, but is the former vice-president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and chairman of the local branch of the United Israel Appeal. Friedman is a lawyer and is famous for his confrontational personality as a TV talk-show host.
The drug scandal gained a lot of attention at the time, especially because many questions were left unanswered. Now sources in the Jewish community question whether Friedman's bodyguards were involved in his incrimination in an effort to end his political career.
In the course of police raids that led to the discovery, the investigators were shocked to find a certificate of appreciation "signed" by the Fueher. On another guard's computer, they found the Nazi Party anthem, which is illegal in Germany. They also found a photograph of one of the guards in an SS uniform. |
