Israeli criminals will soon serve time in a prison operated by private businessmen starting in 2009, Ynetnews reported.

Israel will pay the franchisers $13 million for building the prison, which will be located south of Beer Sheva. Accountant General Yaron Zelicha finalized the deal and agreed to pay an additional $6 million if construction is completed early.

The franchisers will build the prison and run it 25 years. Afterwards, the facility will be transferred to governmental control.

The overall construction costs are estimated at $239 million, $80 million of which will be state-funded.
