Syrian President Bashar Assad echoed Monday the general feeling of disappointment in Olmert's government, asserting in an interview with Saudi newspaper Al-Jazira that it is the "weakest in history."
In the interview he also confirmed his pessimism in renewing the peace process between the bordering countries within the near future or coming two years.
He stated, however, that "you can't completely lose hope for peace. Otherwise, you have to go the way of war, whether you want to or not."
Assad said in the interview that there have been attempts to mediate peace by American, European and Arab representatives who have traveled to Syria, but no real progress has been made.
Olmert has ignored the Syrian president's calls for peace talks citing Syria's connections with the terrorist group Hizbollah and Iran, a country that constantly calls for Israel's destruction.
Assad spoke of Syria's relationship with the Islamic nation, saying "Iran is a neighboring country, large and regionally important. Positive relations between an Arab country and Iran serve the interests of the region. The same is true of Arab relations with Turkey."
Assad also spoke of his support of the Mecca Accords, calling this the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. |
