The Nazareth District Court ruled that Israel must compensate 30-year old Palestinian Ataf Naif for injuries sustained from IDF fire as a teenager in 1993, Ynetnews reported. The injury left Naif paralyzed in his lower body.
The court decision was based on a Supreme Court ruling that the government is responsible for all damages that are a result of IDF activity in the territories.
The lawsuit claimed that the man, who was 16 at the time, was on his way home in Gaza when he noticed people running for cover in a nearby field. He was shot in the shoulder by IDF soldiers, and then again at close range when he got up.
Israel claimed that the IDF soldiers were sent to the area after receiving news that Hamas members, along with wanted terrorists, were gathering. The state claimed that the soldiers began shooting when they realized their lives were in danger. |
