Russia has given Iran an ultimatum: Either Iran concedes to UN Security Council demands that the Islamic country halt enrichment or Russia will refuse to supply fuel for Iran's nuclear program, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
Iran and Russia have disputed lately over the issue of supplying fuel to Iran's Bushehr nuclear facility in Natantz. Russia apparently charged that Iran is late on payments -- accusations which Iran was quick to reject, lashing back that Russia is succumbing to international pressure.
Russia nevertheless decided to delay the transfer of fuel, in effect delaying the opening of the Bushehr facility.
"We're not sure what mix of commercial and political motives are at play here, but clearly the Russians and the Iranians are getting on each other's nerves - and that's not all bad," a senior official of the Bush administration was quoted as saying, the Times reported. |
