Rice will meet new non-Hamas PA members

Israel may not agree, but US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice plans to meet at the weekend with members of the "new" Hamas-led Palestinian Authority, as long as they are not Hamas members themselves.

Rice is due to arrive Friday for a visit in Egypt, Israel (including the PA areas) and Jordan.

We have "settled on what we thought was an appropriate and right contact policy. I know the Israeli Government has a different view in this regard," said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.

There is no likelihood that the Olmert government, which is eager to stay on best terms with Washington, will publicly object to such meetings.

Jerusalem sat quietly Tuesday as the US Consul-General met with PA Finance Minister Salam Fayad in what the Israeli press described as "a sign of a break in policy between Israel and its closest ally."
