Syria rejects UN monitors

Syria has rejected a UN proposal to deploy civilian monitors on the Lebanese side of the Syria-Lebanon border in an effort to stop arms from reaching Hizbullah.

According to reports, Damascus threatened to completely shut down the border if the UN went ahead with the plan, even though the monitors would be deployed on Lebanese soil.

Syria has long been Hizbullah primary supplier, and is said to want to keep its proxy intact both as a destabilizing force inside Lebanon and as a military threat to northern Israel.
