A team of Turkish experts arrived in Israel on Tuesday to inspect the now suspended construction works near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem that had the Muslim world up in arms.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agreed to allow a Turkish inspection of the site during his visit with the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan in February. Erdogan asked to send the delegation even after Olmert provided him with pictures of the construction showing the works were no danger to Al-Aqsa mosque.
The stated purpose of the inspection is to allay Muslim fears that the construction is damaging the mosque.
On Thursday, the team is scheduled to meet with Muslim leaders and members of the Jerusalem Waqf, the group that controls the Temple Mount. |
