The new Tourism Minister, Yitzhak Aharonovitch, stated on Thursday that he is interested in legalizing casinos, Ynetnews reported.

Aharonovitch, who is a retired police officer, said he is well aware of the problems that are associated with gambling. However, he believes that legal gambling has benefits, as "a casino could boost tourism, provide employment and help the local economy," he said.

"If we take everything into account we can find the way to run a casino without bringing about negative affects," Aharonovitch said.

According to several sources, Israelis spend hundreds of millions of dollars on illegal gambling in Israel and at casinos around the world.
