Serena Williams beat Shahar Peer, the 19-year-old Israeli, 7-6 (4), 6-1 on Thursday night for a berth in the final at the Miami Open.

Peer played well for about an hour before Williams was able to pull away. In the first set Williams was struggling with her backhand and failed to break serve. She said her left knee was sore and it bothered her. She later said that she had forgotten to take her anti-inflammatory medicine.

"I started out really slow," Williams said. "I think I was a little nervous. And then I just finished well."

Shahar Peer said, "I was very close. The first set could go either way. Unfortunately, the second set she was running away."
