A Palestinian man stabbed two border police officers as he approached an Israeli checkpoint outside the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron on Sunday.
The assailant, a 17-year-old Palestinian, approached the cave from the Palestinian side and stabbed one officer in the back, seriously wounding him. A second victim was lightly wounded in the hand.
Another officer then shot and wounded the assailant. Israeli rescue services said the man was wounded in the leg and brought to the hospital for treatment.
IDF immediately dispersed in the area to set up roadblocks.
According to reports from Hebron Palestinians, IDF closed the Cave of the Patriarchs while some worshippers were still inside the mosque there, in order to search the area.
Palestinians in the area fear that the Jewish settlers in Hebron will take revenge on them in response to the attack, reported Ynetnews.
According to extreme right-wing activist Baruch Marzel, "This is the terrorists' response to those who are seeking to release Hamas prisoners with blood on their hands."
"Every time they talk about releasing terrorists, violence escalates and the perpetrators receive encouragement," he concluded.
