Two new tunnels between the Gaza Strip and Egypt were uncovered by Egyptian authorities, and a Palestinian man attempting to cross into Egypt through one of the tunnels was arrested, said a security official Sunday.
The Egyptian officials uncovered the tunnels in Rafah, a border city in the Sinai Peninsula
According to Capt. Mohammed Badr of the North Sinai Peninsula police, food and water was found in the tunnel through which the arrested man was attempting to cross. He also said that police were holding the man, in his early 20s, for questioning.
Badr reported that the other tunnel, which was found inside a Rafah residential area, was not being sealed off in the hope that security forces could arrest people trying to use it.
Israel has often complained that Palestinian militants use the tunnels for smuggling weapons to be used in terrorist attacks, charging that Egypt had been ineffective in preventing the smuggling.
Though Egypt denies this, it recently claimed it would increase its security efforts in the area.
According to Ynetnews, "In the past two months, Egyptian security forces have arrested eight Palestinians in the Egypt-Gaza border area, three of whom were suspected of planning attacks on Israeli tourists." |
