Three Arab teenagers were denied entry to the Western Wall while visiting Jerusalem with a delegation of Israeli and German high school students, the rest of the group being allowed to enter.
The delegation, comprised of Southern Israeli students and German youth exchange participants, arrived at the Western Wall where guards asked to see identification. After examining the IDs, the guards would not allow the Arab students to enter, reported Ynetnews.
The students responded by not entering and leaving the area as a sign of solidarity with the three Arab students.
According to police, "Security guards sought to conduct a sample examination of the group members' IDs, but the latter refused and left the place."
"This was shameful and disgraceful. German tourists arrive at a site holy to the Jews, and this is what they see," said Zakariya Barhoum of Ein Rafaa, father of Salah, one of the students not allowed to enter.
The office of Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz responded to the incident, stating that the security decisions were under the control of the police.
"Our policy is that the Western Wall is an important Jewish institute, which is open to all those who wish to come and pray there," the Rabbi's office stated. |
