Three students were arrested, including Tel Aviv University's student union head, during a protest of the Shochat Committee's supposed plan to raise tuition.

Approximately 250 students protested Wednesday outside north Tel Aviv's Open University, where the Shochat Committee on Reform in Higher Education generally meets. The committee however, met in an undisclosed location in anticipation of the protest.

According to Tel Aviv University's student union spokesperson Dafna Cohen, police arrested three of the protesters, one being Tel Aviv University student union head Boaz Toporovsky, as the students were attempting to break down a fence at the Shochat Committee offices.

Students were carrying signs reading "Olmert Resign" and "Soon We'll make up degrees like Tartman too," reported Ynetnews. The students initiated a strike Tuesday to protest the supposed plan to raise tuition.

According to the Jerusalem Post, "The university students went on strike Tuesday after demanding a meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, whom they accuse of 'not caring' about the 'precarious' state of higher education in Israel."

Students were demanding an immediate meeting with the prime minister as well as the disbanding of the Shochat Committee.

Meanwhile, other student protesters marched outside Tel Aviv University.

"Until Prime Minister Ehud Olmert meets with the students, we will shake up the entire country, block roads, protest in the streets, and strike until further notice," said National Students Association Chairman Itai Shonshine.

"Olmert, we only have one small request -- resign. Olmert, you keep hurting the education system, and we'll hurt you politically," stated College Students' Association Chairman Itai Barda.

Strikes spreading throughout educational system

The teachers union announced Wednesday that its strike would continue to Thursday.

The Secondary School Teachers' Organization announced Tuesday that it would start an open-ended strike Wednesday, thus closing down schools for an undetermined amount of time.

The university and college closures are estimated to affect 250,000 students, and the secondary school closures will affect an approximate 650,000 seventh- to twelfth-graders.
