Now, a melon libel: Saudi rumors Israel infected cantaloupes with AIDS

The latest Arab blood libel against Israel's Jews claims that Israeli melons being exported throughout the Middle East have been injected with the AIDS virus, reported Ynetnews Friday.

An urgent SMS message sent to cellphone users in Saudi Arabia warned against purchasing melons that may have originated in Israel because the Jews had used the fruit as a carrier for the deadly disease.

The Saudi Interior Ministry later rejected the claim, noting that AIDS cannot survive in the low temperatures of a melon.

According to Ynetnews, "The rumor, despite being denied several times, has gained so much steam in the Arab world that it made it to the front page of one of the most important Arabic language newspapers."

Outlandish rumors against Israel are spread throughout Israel's Arab neighbors by way of the media and educational institutions.
