According to a bill proposed recently by MK Gilad Erdan, Knesset members would have the power to discharge MKs who are indicted but fail to appear at the judicial proceedings against them, Ynetnews reported.
The bill was motivated by the current investigation against Balad Chairman Azmi Bishara, but Erdan emphasized that it is not meant for him solely.
"The bill is not against Bishara, but against any future MK who will try to weasel out of appearing before the judicial authority. This would be a process that would be rarely engaged, but, sadly, in this day and age, it has become thinkable," he said.
Erdan used Bishara's case to explain the importance of the legislation. "There may be a situation in which MK Bishara is indicted and he doesn't appear at the judicial proceedings because he is abroad. Then he will, absurdly, remain an MK until the end of his term."
The proposal has two parts. According to the first part, any MK indicted on criminal charges who chooses not appear at the judicial hearings will automatically lose his benefits, including his salary.
The second part of the bill would grant Knesset members the power to dismiss an indicted MK who does not attend his judicial proceedings. The dismissal would require the signature of twenty MKs, which would then be submitted to the attorney general for approval. The approval of several other government bodies would be necessary before it could be enforced. |
