Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti, currently serving five life-sentences for terrorism in Israel, called Wednesday for the release of kidnapped BBC reporter Alan Johnston. Barghouti referred to Johnston as a "friend" to the Palestinians.
"From my cell, and in the name of 10,000 prisoners in the occupation jails, I appeal and call immediately for the release of journalist Alan Johnston, the friend of the Palestinian people," claimed a statement Barghouti sent to reporters.
Barghouti's statement condemned kidnapping and civilian attacks as being damaging to Palestinian interests and the effort to gain a Palestinian state.
Johnston, whose condition is unknown, was kidnapped in Gaza City on March 12. The reporter's kidnappers recently demanded $5 million for his release, contradicting the previous claims of the Tawheed and Jihad Brigades in Palestine that they had executed Johnston due to Israel's failure to release Palestinian prisoners.
Barghouti is currently serving five consecutive life sentences for killing Israelis in terrorist attacks, plus 20 years for attempted murder and 20 years for active membership of a terrorist organization. |
