Finance Minister suspends himself due to suspicion of theft

Finance Minister Abraham Hirchson, who is suspected of theft, has suspended himself for three months.

He explained his decision, saying, "With the current atmosphere among the public I feel that it would be wrong for me to continue in my position as finance minister.

Hirchson informed the Prime Minister of his decision Sunday morning. Beginning Sunday morning, Olmert took over Hirchson's responsibilities as Finance Minister.

Olmert said, "I will temporarily fill the role of finance minister, until we make a different decision. I will soon convene a meeting with senior Treasury officials and in order to discuss the developments and receive updates."
