Major-General Dudi Cohen was approved unanimously by the government to become Israel's 16th Police Commissioner on Sunday. He will officially replace the current Commissioner, Moshe Karadi, on May 1.
Prison Service chief Yaakov Ganot was originally considered for the position, but he withdrew his candidacy in March. Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter was then left to find a new candidate.
Cohen and the new Deputy Commissioner Shahar Ayalon, will begin nominating a number of senior police officials in the near future.
Following Sunday's vote, Dichter applauded Karadi for his work, saying that "the nation will thank him."
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also praised Karadi, saying "I thank Karadi from the bottom of my heart. He was a great commander who served for decades in the defense establishment, a fair and uncorrupt man." |
