Student strike reaches two-week mark

University students plan on holding a rally in Tel Aviv on Wednesday in what has now become a two-week long strike.

The Committee of University Presidents issued a statement saying that the universities would extend the second semester to make up for classes missed during the strike and said they would fail students who were striking.

The last major student strike in 1998, the universities offered students benefits to help them complete the semester, including giving passing grades and lightening the course load.

University presidents are opposed to the current strike, which aims at breaking up the Shochat Committee, tasked with examining the future of higher education in Israel, due to students' fears that the committee will propose raising tuition fees as part of an education reform.
