The Vatican is indicating that the fight against anti-Semitism is a key issue it wishes to address. A preliminary document outlining the major topics to be discussed at the yearly meeting for the world's Roman Catholic bishops next year devotes an entire section to the Church's relationship with Jews.
The document notes the "close associations of the two in faith" and calls on the Church to make efforts "to overcome every form of anti-Semitism."
The 60-page document was approved by Pope Benedict XVI and includes a questionnaire to be filled out by local bishops.
Among other things, the questionnaire tells bishops to examine the use of biblical passages to "ferment attitudes of anti-Semitism."
The council's General-Secretary, Bishop Nikola Eterovic, said, "Much has already been done, but everything must be done to dispel every shadow," in a news conference about the agenda for the October 2008 meeting.
