Jewish Hall of Famer and renowned pitcher Sandy Koufax was the last player chosen to complete the draft of the first-ever season of the new Israel Baseball League.
After 41 years of retirement from the sport, Koufax is now a member of Modi'in Miracle.
"His selection is a tribute to the esteem with which he is held by everyone associated with this league," said former player Aret Shamsky, manager the Miracle.
"It's been 41 years between starts for him. If he's rested and ready to take the mound again, we want him on our team."
Koufax was a celebrated pitcher for the Dodgers. In 1965 he refused to pitch Game 1 of the World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur.
Former Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette, the current head of operations for the Israel Baseball League, conducted the draft for the six-team league.
The league debuts June 24, with a match up between Modi'in Miracle and Petach Tikva Pioneers. The league's 120 players hail from nine different countries, and approximately a dozen are expected to be Israeli citizens.
