Soccer superstar David Beckham has been invited by the Peres Center for Peace to visit Israel next summer along with the rest of the Real Madrid football team, ynet reports. The Spanish club will play an exhibition match against a team of Israeli and Palestinian players.
The team is due to arrive June 19, just before Beckham is heads to the United States to begin playing with the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Real Madrid players will also meet with Palestinian and Israeli children from the Peres Center's Twinned Peace Soccer Schools.
"The arrival of such huge stars to the country will contribute to the removal of the hate barriers that exist between Jewish and Palestinian children," Vice Premier Shimon Peres said. "There is no doubt that through soccer we can show that peace is possible."
Let's hope there's no head-butting. |
