Sderot residents pass on Mediterranean cruise

Fourteen Sderot residents will be going on a cruise of the Mediterranean offered by a private cruise company in an effort to give the rocket-stricken city's residents a break.

The cruise company offered the Sderot municipality 100 tickets for a 14-day cruise, but surprisingly only 14 residents agreed to go.

The municipality decided to offer the tickets to residents whose homes had been damaged by the rocket attacks.

Yossi Tamsit, whose wife and son were wounded by an attack, explained his declining the trip.

"We just couldn't do it. The house is still a mess, and we're doing everything we can to get back on our feet. I had to say no," he explained to Ynetnews Sunday.

Yossi Pinhas Cohen, an assistant to the city's mayor, explained, "The mayor, Eli Moyal, is very upset with me for taking this on. He says it might give people the wrong idea. We went along with property tax guidelines [to determine which residents should attend] and were able to get 14 people to go on the cruise."

"We may see more people come on board in the next few hours," he continued. "I see nothing wrong in sending those hurt by the Qassams on a cruise. The cruise company was kind enough to offer the tickets, and we are more than happy to give these people a break."

The cruise, set to visit Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Corpo, Dubrovnik, and Venice, generally goes for $1,600 a ticket.
