Ronald S. Lauder was elected President of the New York based-World Jewish Congress late Sunday, with a mandate to put the broom to an organization torn asunder bitter internal feuding and allegations of financial mismanagement.
Lauder, who had teamed with Matthew Bronfman, son of outgoing President Edgar Bronfman, defeated by a vote of 11-4 the South African steel magnate and longtime organization official, Mendel Kaplan, in the organization's executive committee meeting. A second vote in the larger governing board was slated to take place in New York later Sunday, but that will not affect Lauder's victory. |
