Report: Syria eager to talk peace without preconditions

Damascus is ready to renew peace talks with Israel, said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem in an article in the London-based al-Hayat newspaper Wednesday.

"Syria is more than ready to renew peace talks with Israel, without preconditions by either side," stated Moallem in the article.

Moallem was also quoted as expressing his hope that the new Defense Minister Ehud Barak would push Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to restart the peace process with Syria.

Olmert mentioned the issue during a press conference with US President George W. Bush in Washington, responding to accusations that the US was preventing Israel from entering into talks with Syria.

''The United States never came to us with a demand not to have negotiations with the Syrians, and we never thought to ask permission,'' stated Olmert.

According to the Israeli prime minister, negotiations will be held when circumstances are such that allow talks to proceed.

Israel has long maintained that Syria must cut ties with Iran and end support for Hezbollah in order for peace to progress.

Olmert added that, ''I believe that a war will not break out. We are not interested in it and I believe the Syrians are not interested in it. Certain statements can sometimes lead to miscalculations and we need to be wary of that."
