Israel Baseball League (IBL) kicks off today as the Petach Tikva Pioneers face the Modi'in Miracle, on the first opening day of the first professional baseball league in Israel.
The new league consists of six teams, including: the Bet Shemesh Blue Sox, Modi'in Miracle, Netanya Tigers, Petach Tikva Pioneers, Ra'anana Express and Tel Aviv Lightning.
Each team is scheduled to play 45 regular season games with an all-star game on July 29 and a championship game on August 19.
The IBL differs from American baseball in that the games will last seven innings instead of nine, and in the case of ties, the winner will be decided via homerun contests.
Former Montreal Expos and Boston Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette was named director of operations of the IBL by Boston businessman Larry Baras, who initiated the new league.
