On Sunday, the Cabinet approved transferring back to Jordan four Jordanian prisoners currently serving life sentences in Israel for killing two IDF soldiers.
Though the intent is that the prisoners will fulfill the remainder of their sentences in Jordan, some believe that Jordanian King Abdullah will release them within 18 months.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni supported the transfer, saying that the prisoners had already served 17 years.
Following the Cabinet meeting, outgoing Cabinet Secretary Yisrael Maimon confirmed that the prisoners would be transferred by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Three of the prisoners were given life-sentences for entering Israel and ambushing an IDF patrol unit on November 7,1990. The ambush killed Captain Yehuda Lifshitz.
The fourth prisoner also entered Israel, infiltrated an IDF stronghold and killed Staff Sergeant Pinchas Levi on November 12, 1990. He was a minor at the time, and also given a life sentence. |
