Kidnappers of BBC reporter offer compromise to Hamas

The Army of Islam, kidnappers of BBC reporter Alan Johnston, have offered to compromise with Hamas, suggesting a joint religious committee to help negotiations, Ynetnews reported Tuesday.

"It has been agreed that Sheikh Ali Ben Aouda al-Ghafri will intervene to reconcile the brothers in Hamas and those in the Army of Islam by releasing people kidnapped by both sides," stated a message on the al-Qaida affiliated al-Firdaws internet forum Tuesday.

The "reconciliation letter" called for a "conferring with Allah's law with regards to the British prisoner with the Army of Islam through a legal committee whose members are chosen by both groups."

The letter was signed by the Army of Islam but stated that Hamas refursed to sign.

The BBC has responded that it is "aware of these reports and is continuing to monitor the situation closely,"

Johnston has been the hostage of the Army of Islam, a derivative of the Gazan Dagmoush clan, since he was captured in Gaza City this past March.

The Army of Islam has demanded that Great Britain release an al-Qaida affiliated Muslim cleric.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Hamas has stepped up efforts to release Johnston.

Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled Abu Hilal stated that security forces "will not spare any efforts to free the British journalist."
