Four Jordanian prisoners currently serving life sentences in Israel for killing two IDF soldiers were transferred back to Jordan Thursday to fulfill the remainder of their sentences, despite a petition filed against the transfer.
According to a government official, Jordan has assured Israel that the prisoners will serve at least 18 months upon their return.
The High Court rejected an appeal against the transfer Wednesday filed by the Almagor organization, which represents terror victims' families, and by mother to one of the soldiers killed, Sarah Levy, on the grounds that the transfer involved issues of security and diplomacy, which the government is responsible for.
The petition charged that "the Israeli public would pay the price for the release of the terrorists by having lost the power to punish and deter terrorism."
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni supported the transfer, saying that the prisoners had already served 17 years.
Following the Cabinet meeting, outgoing Cabinet Secretary Yisrael Maimon confirmed that the prisoners would be transferred by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Three of the prisoners were given life-sentences for entering Israel and ambushing an IDF patrol unit on November 7,1990. The ambush killed Captain Yehuda Lifshitz.
The fourth prisoner also entered Israel, infiltrated an IDF stronghold and killed Staff Sergeant Pinchas Levi on November 12, 1990. He was a minor at the time, and also given a life sentence. |
